After waking about 5 times during the night, from 3am onwards, thinking I'd better get up to go, i finally managed to get myself out of bed a bit after 7am.
A quick shower, dressed, put the trailer on, load the bike, and off we go. Went along a "short cut", only to find the road closed, and had to double back, costing me about 15 minutes.
This saw me leaving at about 7:30, which meant that some of the speed limits along the way were accidentally overlooked in the interests of being there on time.
Stopped to buy snakes & gatorade on the way at a local shop.
Eventually got to where the fuel stop was supposed to be, realised the map was drawn not quite right, had to double back about 3 kms and drop it off, luckily by then (8:30), I was pretty much on time.
I ran into Russell, Rachel & Russell's Sister at the fuel dump before hotfooting it over to the start of the event, the main control.
Mark was already there with Michelle, so after unloading the bike, I said a quick hello to them, and proceeded to the entries desk. Once that was all sorted, it was back to get the gear on, and push the bike over with my helmet to be inspected.
Of course, something always has to go wrong, and in my case, while i'd checked out my blinkers, and replaced a bulb, I assumed (falsely) that my rear brake/tail light was working ok.
It wasn't. They sent me back to get it working. At which point I wondered where I would get a tail light, when I remembered it was actually just a standard car light globe.
I quickly whipped one of the tail lights off the trailer, and sure enough, right size and everything! phew! back on track.
Plugged it in, tested it out, no brake light.
After 15 frantic minutes of fiddling with wires, it turned out to be just the two main wires were exactly opposite of what they should be, and once they were in the right way, we were back on track. Double Phew!
Thanks heaps to Mark and Russell for assistance while trying to get it going.
Unfortunately, this had meant that i'd missed the riders briefing, but Russell filled me in once he got back. There was still around 30 minutes before my minute came up and I got going, so I relaxed a little, drank my gatorade and chatted with the guys.
My minute comes up, and off we go, I knew that the second control was within 1.5km's, but I was distracted, and missed the first turnoff, which once I eventually doubled back, put me about 15 minutes behind. :-( It wasn't looking like my day.
Start off the second control with another rider, I let him go first, as I knew I was already miles behind. Within the 30 metres to the first corner is a big slippery log.
He wheelies to get over it, but the front drops early, slips him sideways and throws him straight off, into the grass on the side.
After giving him a second, I make sure that I'm tackling it right, wheelie over, and go on my way.
Whooohoo, the tracks are nice, and the competitive stages were cool, but boy, was it slippery!
I proceeded fairyl gingerly through the first competitive, then along the next non-comp stage, then stage 2 was up. Hmm, it looked nice also. Off we go, around 3 corners, grab a little front brake, whoops... not that much.. ouch! Damn.
Bruised/jarred my recently broken wrist. Darn. After some quick self examination for a minute or so, I decided it wasn't broken again, but was a bit sore.
Back on the Blue Beastie, and off we go. Darn, front wheel is twisted, a quick hop off to fix that. She's almost right now. Glad i've got the Fly bars on, as the standard bars would have bent for sure!
So, back on track, but at a reduced pace until I see how the wrist is. Still sore. Hmm I'll keep going, and finish the lap.
The next coupld of competitives were nice, with one having a sort of mx track built into it, and there were quite a few jumps as well.
After a couple more controls, I managed to get myself back on the correct minute, but I was certainly going slower than usual. The guy on the minute behind me passed me in a couple of the longer competitive stages, but damn, he looked quick!
Finally get to the fuel dump, fill up, see Russell & the girls there, and head off again.
The competitive after the fuel dump was interesting, with quite a bit through a creek, and then lots of real tight in the trees stuff. Of course, all the while slippery due to the large amount of rain in the days before.
Then there was a couple of long non-comp stages finishing at a short competitive coming into the 1st control again to get ready for the second lap.
It was time to take stock, and I decided that the wrist was a little sore to continue, so pulled out after completing half the enduro/trial.
I hung around while Tim, Ben and Mark came through the first control, had a little chat to them, then headed off to the fuel dump, and then home.
I only had one crash, but darn it hurt. Driving home, it was hard changing gears with the left hand, and my right shoulder started to ache from where I'd fallen on it. If I'd done another lap, I think i'd have been VERY sore driving home.
Russell, Mark, Ben & Tim all completed the second lap without too much trouble, although Ben apparently did some acrobatics on the 525 at one stage :-)
