With the THQ World Supercross GP championship lead to protect, Moto XXX rider Damon Huffman wasn't about to let a sore ankle keep him out of action when the series resumed in St. Louis last weekend. Huffman took a much needed week off when the series went to Daytona, which didn't count towards the World championship. After working hard to rehab and strengthen the ailing joint, he decided to gut out the next race in St. Louis and salvage what points he could.
Despite the physical limitations, it was hard to tell that there was anything wrong with "Huffy" once he got on the track. He qualified for the main event and got a good start. Things were going well until a couple of miscues almost resulted in a crash. Though Shaken, Damon was able maintain his composure and complete the race. He finished twelfth and scored valuable points. His lead in the THQ World Supercross GP is 15-points as the series heads to Indianapolis. Damon is currently the top privateer in both the AMA and World Supercross championship series.
St. Louis marked the season debut of Moto XXX's perennial on-track leader-Kyle Lewis. After missing more than half of the stadium series nursing a shoulder injury, "Lucky" beat the odds once more by getting back on the #23 Moto XXX/Yoshimura Honda. After missing so much action, you might expect to see some rust, but Kyle was fast and able to run a good pace. Had it not been for an untimely crash, he would have made the 250cc main. Nevertheless, it was nice for the team and fans alike to see the popular rider back on the track. Kyle will use the remainder of the Supercross series to regain the speed that has made him the fastest privateer in the past and plans to be running up front when the outdoor nationals begin.
If all goes according to plan and his collar bone heals properly, Larry Ward will re-join the squad for the outdoor season. He and Tim Weigand will represent the team in the 125cc class, while Lewis campaigns the premier division once again.
