2002 xr100 clutch

I have a 2002 XR100 that was given to me and I'm trying to get it going. I'm having trouble getting the clutch to work. I pulled the right engine case and inspeced all parts. Everything appears to be there and assembled correctly... as far as I can tell. When you pulle the lever the pin inside the roller bearing is pressed. This should relieve the pressure on the plates... in theory! Problem is that the pin doesn't move and I can't see how it could relieve the plates? When the square plate on the outside of the clutch assembly is tightened down, compressing the four springs, I don't understand how the plates can get any relief to spin freely if this plate is bottomed out against the four posts I am failing to understand how the plates could gain relief when the pin is pressed in the first place! I apologize for my ignorance here but I guess like anyone else, you have to start somewhere. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
