16-17 The past weekend was a busy time for Vision Motorsport / www.taylorpotterracing.com as Taylor Potter was on his Vision Motorsport’s KTM 250 SXF at the third round of the 2009 MX Nationals at Echo Valley Toowoomba in Queensland and Luke Smith was at the first round of the 2009 Victorian Junior Motocross Titles at Ararat on his Vision Motorsport’s KTM 250 SXF, 125SX and 85SX.
Toowoomba had fantastic weather, it was cool and sunny and the track had been prepared well and it’s a really challenging track with massive up hills and super fast downhills with ruts and all. The weather was a lot cooler and a bit wetter at Ararat but it was still good riding weather and being a two day event the track became tougher over the weekend.
“Overall the Team had a very successful weekend” said Taylor “I finished in 14th place overall in Pro Lites at Toowoomba with a best result of 12th in the second race. There is room for improvement for sure as I wish to run well into the top 10 but I’m getting there much to the surprise of a lot of the full time riders, many who are finishing well behind me.”
I qualified in 15th place which was reasonable but I struggled to get a solid lap in when the timing started as I bent my gear shift on a track side tyre.
The first race was good but a couple of mistakes and riders slipped past me. The second race came together much better and with a good start I was able to achieve 12th place. The track rutted up well and the super fast downhills caught out number of riders but I felt good and that showed in my results.
Luke at the Victorian Titles finished in 7th place overall in the A Grade 12 – U 16 yo 250F class, 8th in the A Grade 12 – U16yo 85 – 150cc class and a bit of a shocker with 23rd in the A Grade 12 – U16yo 100 – 150cc 2 Stroke class.”
“I found that I could not get good starts on my Vision Motorsport’s KTM 125 and with most of the field being made up with 150cc bikes it meant I was trying to catch up rather than actually race. I had a good start in the first race and was able to maintain third place up until the very last lap but I stuffed up one corner, dropped the bike and dropped well back.’ said Luke.
“On the 85 I went well and I was actually pretty surprised by my result on the 250 as the field included Michael Phillips who qualified for the 2009 FIM World Junior Championships and I was up there in with a lot of the factory backed team riders, I know that I have to really specialise on the 250 as I go senior later in the year and will join up with Taylor racing at the next level. I’m looking forward to the next round in June where I intend to be stronger on both the 125 and the 85 and even move up on the 250.”
The results of the MX Nationals can be found on www.ozmotox.com.au and included Matt Moss (Shift Motul Suzuki) in 1st place in the Pro Lites, Jay Marmont (CDR Yamaha) in 1st place in the Pro Open and Harley Quinlan Yamaha) in 1st place in the Under 19’s. This weekend I will be racing the 4th round of the MX Nationals up at Mackay in Queensland. I will be flying out on early Saturday afternoon as work is keeping me busy and the track up there is excellent so I’m really looking forward to the racing. Luke will be out training.
