I am looking to buy a used Honda CR 250. What is a good model year to buy, and why? Year 2000 or newer.

Depends!

On whether you want a good motor or a good chassis. With the CR250 you can't have both. At least not yet. The older non electronic power valve (EPW)engine made both more power and made that power more consistently. But... the older bikes pushed the front end reputedly because the chassis was too stiff. The older chassis also cracked on occasions if subjected to lots of jumps. I have the 2001 which as the killer engine but only an average chassis. I can't remember if the 2002 still had the non EPW engine in which case, that would be the one to go for. But if it has the EPW, then get as new as you can afford or by the 2001 model if the engine is most important to you.
