Southwick is sandy - very sandy. And rough - very rough. The track changes very much during the day too. It's a unique and unforgiving race track. Just ask James Stewart. Or Chad Reed. Or Mike LaRocco.
250: Ricky Carmichael dominated both motos today. Have you heard this before? RC and his Honda have been perfect so far this season - 8 motos, 8 wins, 200 points. Tim Ferry finished second in both motos to finish second overall on the big-bore Yamaha. He's also second in the point standings with 156. Third overall went to Ezra Lusk riding for Kawasaki.
Notes: How about Doug Henry? The former National Champion and Southwick 'home boy' raced today. He even had the lead in each moto! He finished seventh overall. Mike LaRocco returned to racing after being out with a broken wrist. He finished third in the first moto, but DNF'ed the second.
125: Danny Smith, riding the Team Blimpie Suzuki RM 125, took his first overall win of the season! He won the first moto, and followed that up with a fifth in the finale. Ernesto Fonseca had his best finish of the season as well, finishing second overall. Ernesto went 5/2 on the Team Universal Studios/American Honda CR125. Third overall went to 125 West supercross champion Travis Preston on the Factory Connection/Dr. Martens/Amsoil Honda team. Travis had moto finishes of 3/6.
Notes: James Stewart was leading the first moto, and looked to be heading to a victory. However, about two-thirds of the way thru the race, he had to pull off the track with mechanical problems. James did come back to win the second moto convincingly. Chad Reed was running well in the first moto too. At one point, he landed hard from a jump, and injured his shoulder, causing him to DNF. Chad did come back to race the second moto, finishing third, and maintains his points lead! Mike Brown did not race. He rode practice, but his injured knee was too sore to compete. Each moto was 18 laps, and averaged approx. 35 minutes.
