After the quitest of supercross years, KTM plans to hit back with a menacing US import when SUPERCROSS MASTERS 2006 kicks off at Adelaide’s Wayville Showground on Staurday night, February 11.
Leading AMA priveteer TIMMY WEIGAND has signed to ride the Austrian-built flyers for the full Australian year. And h intends running both classes.
Weigand made a name for himself early last year, qualifying for the first five US supercross finals – including a sixth placing at the fabled Anaheim round before being sidelined with a hand injury.
But his results were not concluded. Weigand flew to Western Australia and won their motocross double – King of the Cross and then the Manjimup 15000.
Then a very impressive display at the Oceania motocross in Geelong in November had KTM knocking boldly on his door.
The presence of the American seems certain to reverse the fortunes of KTM – the team which struggled for the past 12 months under a spate of injuries to star riders Ryan Marmont and Daniel McCoy.
Weigand sneaked into Australia two weeks prior to the opening round and has been training with McCoy in the Camden district.
