Reed Stops Carmichael's Streak with Impressive Win
Stewart Captures Fifth Win at Qualcomm
SAN DIEGO (February 9, 2003) - Yamaha's Chad Reed, of Corona, Calif., won
his second THQ World Supercross GP in front of 67,102 fans at Qualcomm
Stadium, which played host to this year's Super Bowl just two weeks ago.
Kawasaki's James Stewart, of Haines City, Florida, earned his
fifth-consecutive 125cc Western Regional AMA Supercross Series win and
extended his points lead to 31 points.
Honda's Michael Byrne earned the $1,500 SXGP.com holeshot award with
Vuillemin, Reed and Carmichael in tow. On lap one, Vuillemin and teammate
Reed passed Byrne with Carmichael in fourth. Reed, who won the Geneva,
Switzerland round of THQ World Supercross GP, passed Vuillemin for the lead
on lap three.
Moments after moving into second place, Carmichael, who came into tonight's
race with a three-race winning streak, crashed and remounted in seventh
place. Reed held on for the win, Vuillemin second and Carmichael third.
"Last weekend I was so close to getting the win, but I made some mistakes,"
said Reed. "There are only a few guys that can ride that pace for 20 laps,
so I made up as much time as possible and rode my own race."
"I am leaving California with the points lead," said Carmichael on his third
place finish. "I want to win the title and you can't do it like that. I
guess you live and learn. It's every man for themselves."
In the 125cc main event, privateer Tiger Lacy, of Wolf Creek, Ore., won the
$1,000 SXGP.com holeshot award but was passed one turn later by Stewart, who
led 55 laps coming into tonight's 15-lap event. Last year's champion, Travis
Preston, of Hesperia, Calif., worked his way into second place early on, and
passed Suzuki's Sean Hamblin. Stewart went on to win by more than 18 seconds
over Preston and Smith.
"It all started here last year," said Stewart, who won his first supercross
event in San Diego last season. "I am going home happy tonight - everything
worked well out there."
