It depends

On your ability, your size, your age perhaps, and what you want to do in the future on a dirtbike.

I know a young guy who went straight from a XR100 to a KTM250EXC (hi Tom). Why?

1. 250 so that he could ride it on a probationary license a few months after he got it and turned 16
2. The exc has a button and he had short legs ;-)
3. He had ridden everybody elses bikes in the club, from XR100 to CR500/YZ490, and show that he could handle more power.

For Tom, getting a CRF150 or CRF230 would have been a pain as soon he would want to trailride and be on a licensed bike. A bike with kickstart only would have been a pain when stuck on snotty hills.

There are lots of things to think of. If you post some more details about yourself (height, age, weight, riding style, experience on other bikes), we may be able to help you more.
