You have to remember that there are to sides to the 2stroke - 4stroke story, Yes a 2stroke will match a 4stroke of about double the capacity, 4strokes need less care, no oil, they are far quieter, about double the fuel economy, and they have some other pros too, such as torque right across the rev range.
So you always have to keep an open mind, because at the end of the day it really depends on you riding style.

Mabye your right, but from my friends with 2strokes have to have them rebuilt pretty often, where as all the 4strokes i have ridden just keep running. My first bike, a Honda xl250s had been running hard for 23 years, and as far as I know its still running- (stolen)

True, but I think 4stroke enduros are really reliable (especially hondas, but they are pretty pricey). On another topic, I think its a waste to go for small bore 4strokes because for a lot of models the 400cc only weight 10-20lbs heavier than the 250's.
