The main problem CRF250X's have are valve related. The main problem being that the valves were closing up due to poor materials used on the valves and valve seats, if an exhaust valve does this your in for an expensive job. This problem has been fixed on the 06 model so if your buying new, you shouldn't have a problem, if your buying used you could get this fixed by a decent bike mechanic. Either way you would have to check valve clearances regularly. Apart from that i have heard they are pretty damn good.
My pick would be the CRF but thats only because i have had more experience with hondas.
