I have a 94 Yamaha YZ250 I have always ridden 2 stroke yz 250's. These bikes are great! but the bike isnt good for what I like to ride! I was looking into a 00-02 Yamaha YZ426F or a 450 of some sort. I know the 2 strokes wind way out and have lots of power on the mid to top, but do the bigger bore 4 strokes pull as fast as the my 250 2 stroke does? Obviously the 2 stroke has the advantage of high winding but do the bigger bore 4 stroke pull as hard? Also I like to climb climb climb! so the 4 stroke is kinda what im after for going up hill mostly! Any input appreciated! What would the power be like? 2 stroke is wild and well you know, but is the big bore 4 stroke as fast off the line and have the wild'ish power?

Hey do you have any pics of ur yz250 i had a old yz125 as well 95 pic of it on my profile love that bike.
I made the change from a old yz to a new bike and all i can say is ur 250 will be nackerd compared to most mordern 250s. Get a spin of a 00 yz250 even bet you will think why am i still living back in 94. Im not a fan of the 4 strokes so i wont go into it.

i think that actually the 4 stroke takes off faster than the 2, but i think it all comes down to your skills

I would consider my skills intermediate on the trails, not quite insane yet but getting there. I like really steep stuff so I thought maybe a 4 stroke 450 would be a better choice for the terrain I like. But im not sure on the power difference. Here are the picture links below

Very nice reminds me of my old bike.
Yeah only thing about 450s they have too much power and they are heavy so if you fall off on a hill you going to be worn out picking it up and trying to hold onto it on them big ass hills would be a pain. You should really get a spin off one to see if you like it, You might miss the power vavle on your 2smokey xD.

The 450's are only about 8 pounds heavier at the most

Im pretty strong I walk at work 12 miles a day so i dont ware out easy. Yea i might go see if i can take a spin. I know the 450's arent gunna have the powerband of a 2 stroke 250, cause the 4 stroke 450's have a flywheel so they dont take off as fast as my 2 stroke no flywheel bike goes. I think i might do some mods to the motor and wait till next yr for a new bike. Reed cage, pipe it, fly wheel weight, port, polish, bore it or if im really creative i might find a way to make a stroker of some type. I wonder if a yz426 crank will work? Hmmmm I'll have to go check on that maybe the 400.
CR250R Or CRF250R
These Bikes Are The Top 10 Of The Honda Bikes They Offer Amazing Power And Speed I My Self Has A CRF230F And Can pass A YZ250F Will Yes It's Not Much Diffrence But Still There Close
fly wheel??
ive got a queston. i jsut bought a 99 cr 125r it is in great shape. gold sprocket, rims. carbon fibre reeds rebuilt engine too trick suspension and a full tank of gas. the guy i bought it off of said he installed a fly wheel so it wont do as much wear in low rpms (starting and idling) what exactly does a fly wheel do??

Sounds like a good bike! The flywheel is ment to keep the inertia of the motor, to resist slowing down. The flywheel is going to increase rotating mass and the bike wants to keep going instead of slowing down and dieing. As to starting and idling it makes a difference. It helps in 2 stroke idle quiality because the engine is turning with the added weight at a more constant speed not up and down because of the compression stroke so its smoother. And starting i noticed is actually easier because the weight will make that kick turn the motor longer making it easier to start!
ok thanks very much :)

Looks like a good bike! New bolts for what? Im pretty happy with the flywheel on my bike, all the power goes straight to the ground and less spinning tire!
4 Stroke all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a 2002 yz426f and i love it it is great for the trails lots of low end torque and plenty of top end have not met a 2 stroke that could keep up yet! I also have a 99 yz 250 but it is nothin to my 426f love em both but would recomend u get four stroke
