got a sweet cr500 from my neighbor. ran it a couple of weekends in a row & after last trip went to change oil & it was a gray type of elmers glue looking shit in the case, what could it be? i thought water from radiator but checked it out & the level was the same as before. if anybody has a solution as to what it may be. when i rode it i had no change in the performance, climbed like a mad man, took a couple of hole shots from a few newer bikes (yz) 4 strokes to be exact & didnt lose any power at all. can anybody help me with this situation. i called a few shops and they all said it was water in the case but like i said, the level is still the same, no change to level at all.

Interesting...... That it is grey is normal (to some extent) but gooey??? I would have also said water. What I also thought it could be is that the last time your neighbor changed the oil was a while ago. I talked with my garagist and he said that age could be a factor and he also thinks that depending on where the bike was stored, there could still have been bad isolation which could affect somewhat the aspect of the oil. good deal brother. i was thinking the same thing in the means of where the bike sat fro almost a year. i have changed it now 3 times, i like to change the oil after every ride, personal thing i guess. anyway, this time the oil looked gray again, not as gluey though. ask your bro if there is a way that the gray gooey stuff could still be in there and hang around for a few more times & if so, is there any type of solution that can be used to clean out the inside of the trany without making it into some serious problem. the reason is this, i am thinking that maybe this stuff,(whatever it is) may be staying around in there because of the fact it is so gooey & wont just come out. on the other hjand, if it's not making a difference in my performance why bother, sound right?

hey dude, one more thing, if the water is not coming from the radiator than it can't be water, right? also, it sat in a shed & garage for almost 1 year. i don't know if that helps as to where it was sitting.

i was thinking that it might be some sealent in your bike to start with cause that was the problem with my tt250. But if you say that the actual oil itself is grey then im not sure what it could be. maybe its just the colour your oil turns when heated, you could try using differnt oils and see how that goes. Another thought about how you were thinking of how to clean the bottom end with out making it a big project. Me and my mate were thinking of doing it myself and we thought maybe just use some petrol down there and hope it doesn't stuff your gasgets not that it should. well good luck wiht your bike anyway

dude, i was thinking the same thing about petrol, however, we call it (gas) over here in the states bud ;o)...the words you guys use down there are great.... anyway, thanks for the help but about the gas thing when i mentioned that to one of the guys at the honda dealership (who i really dont trust anyway when it comes to my bike) they told me that no way at all should I put anything down in my trainy! as far as i am concerned, something could allready be down there, but maybe not. do you thing it would be safe to try that? and should i pour it in & let it drain out at the exact same time as i pour it in? let me know as i neeed & want to do something about this as soon as possible......

tranny oil

the grey colour could be a combination of condensation from sitting in a damp area. i don't know about the gooey crap though -maybe some knob put a aftermarket conditioner in it. the grey colour is very normal with clutch plate wear especially aluminum clutch plates .i run a cr500 and have been really happy with the pro honda hp trans oil it is sae 80w85w its the best oil i have ever used and i have been riding 30 years. keep changing your oil frequently.ride on.

grey oil

the grey in ur oil is prob. from coolant .It dosent take much in oil to make it grey.I have an 86 cr500 and their bad about coroding in the water pump.Mine was eaten away badly but i repard it with JB weld ,its held for 2yr's now just make sure u clean out the corotion good sandblat it if possible

you my have a crack somewere in the case or the fluid just has not been changed for a while and moisture built up.

IF THERE ISINT ANY FLUID LOSS FROM COLLANT OR OIL THEN DONT WORY AND HAVE FUN. I HAVE A BUILT CR 500 THAT IS REALLY HARD TO START IT HAS NO AIR BOX AND IS PORTED AND POLISHED. I HAVE BEEN TOLD 500S ARE HARD TO START.I WAS THINKING ABOUT MAKING IT STOCK MAYBE THAT WOULD HELP.WHAT 500 IS THE FASTEST I HEARD KALASAKI AND KTM ARE THE FASTEST DO YOU THINK AND WHICH ONE IS THE EASIEST TO START?
