Hi, I have an 03 wr250f and it is pretty much stock, and the exhaust is really quiet, anyway a mate of mine told me he read in a mag that you can cut the end off the muffler (aust model is welded at the end) and pull the guts out the pip and make the hole on the end cap bigger and weld it back ondoes anyone else heard about this or d it ? if so how? Thanks.
Dont do it
The Australian mufflers are better each year. Doing that would gain little if anything power wise, but make it hugely louder.
Your best bet might be to goto a bike shop and see if you can pickup an '04 muffler cheap, as I believe they are slightly better than the '03 ones.
I'm not sure if it can be done with the '03 and '04 WRFs, but changing to the YZ timing was the best mod that I made to the bike. I also a Staintune full system on it, and it made a difference, but going to the YZ timing made a bigger difference, and was not as loud and annoying.
...
I would like to have done the cam timing trick but sadly for me on the 03 models and after, they are electric start meaning auto decompression, so I would have to buy a whole new YZ exhaust cam. I will see what i can dig up.
Exhaust Cam
Yes, I put an '03 Exhaust Cam into my '02 after having the YZ timing for a while, and it was very easy to start then ;-) The decomp soon got removed.
wr250f pipe
you could try mc performance in melbourne i know they do wr450 pipes (cut & shut job) mine is being done right now, I've read good things about them so I'll find out soon and let you know how it go's, speak to Mark on 0418-549-730
thanks.
did they give you much idea on how much it would cost you? sounds like a plan. Im in SA so I could send it over to them.
cost
for a 450 pipe it is $250 plus postage (about $10) check thier site www.mcperformance.com.au also the jetting does not have to be touched. Hope this helps.

wr450 pipe
got pipe back today and it makes a big difference, much smoother running maybe a little more power, but just feels better, it feels like it should and it is not to loud i would say go for it with MC PERFORMANCE
Money better spent
I just bought a staintune full system for my 450 and the difference is unbelievable. Heaps more down low and it now lofts the front easily for trail obsticals and 4th gear wheelies. Noise level is very acceptable too.
My point in all this!
I think although the MC performance is obviously an improvement over stock, you are probably better off getting a aftermarket pipe purpose built for your bike, much better value. If you keep the standard pristine stock pipe in the shed. When it comes to sale time you can easily replace your aftermarket one with the new stocker and sell the other on ebay or something and get some money back. If you pay say $550 for a aftermarket pipe, you will still get at least $250-$300 in a couple of years time. WR's are popular models and parts like exhausts are very sort after.
I have modified the pipe for $20
I realise that this thread is now a few months old, but I have modified the Aussie stock pipe on my wr450. It is the same pipe as the wr250. I have got some photos and comments if anyone is interested. Just send me an email with your email address and I will forward it onto you.
The job is a piece of piss to do. You just need someone who can weld stainless steel. The whole conversion cost me $20! The bike rips with 165MJ, 48PJ & 2.5 turns on fuelscrew.

You just contridicted yourself, they may be popular but that brings the price down because there are so many around.
