CRF230F Engine Problem

My daughters and I are relatively new owners of a 2004 CRF230F. It has provided us with several months of great fun. However, we recently started having problems getting it started and keeping it running. We've cleaned the air filter, changed the oil, put in a new spark plug, and cleaned the carburator. We have been barely able to get it running a couple of times and only then for a few minutes. It starts to catch and then dies out. I've been checking the spark plug and it is very black and sooty after only a few minutes of turning it over.

We're new to dirt bikes and have very little experience troubleshooting engine problems. Anybody out there have any ideas what the problem might be?

CRF230F Problem

You did all the right stuff as far as troubleshooting go's.
I would think it's a crab problem, maybe your float is off.
Could be a plugged jet. Even though you cleaned the carb, dirt in the carb can be very tricky to get out. try an air compressor on the needle valve and the jet's. GOOD LUCK

CRF230F Engine Problem - Update

Thanks for the tips and suggestions guys! After all the basic troubleshooting stuff that I did, I actually did take the bike into the local Honda shop. They changed the spark-plug (there was a brand new one already in, although it did get black and sooty real quick) and told me it was fixed. Although it did run in the shop, they didn't take it for a test drive. (There's a lesson to be learned there;) Today a buddy of mine came over and we checked most everything. Wiring seems good, we checked the gap on the plug, checked the timing (good thing he was there because I learned alot) and everything checked out OK. However, the spark plug doesn't appear to be firing regularly and its not producing a nice blue spark(it's weak). This narrowed it down to the coil and the ignition module. I put an oscilloscope on the input to the coil and it appears to be regular pulse that's 12V and about 20ms long (is this good?) My present thinking is that the problem is the coil which I will probably replace next weekend.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks again

coil

when a coil burns they work good when its cold then as soon as it warms up they screw up and start being shity so that would explain you gettin a steady 12 v on ur test.
