Top speed of a bike is important depending on the type of riding. For track riding sprocket sizes should be determined accorinding to track conditions and track layout. The change in sprockets will in turn change the top speed of the bike and will also change the places on the track where one may grab the next gear or feather the clutch. For trail riding it all depends on how fast a guy is. Sometimes a guy needs fifth and all the speed he can get in order to scare ones self. For oval riding I know guys who have set 450f's to do 125mph.... so you can see top speed is important depending on the type of riding.
